Before the colonization of the Sikh Empire, the Sikhs were known to be formidable warriors not only to protect the empire but to stand for the disadvantaged and bring equality to all persons. At the end of colonialism in 1947 came the formation of India and Pakistan. The Sikhs did not regain the territory which was once theirs. With promises from India to provide some autonomy and sovereignty to the Sikh community, once partition was complete, those promises never came to fruition.
